AMAZON UNDERWORLD IS A COLLABORATIVE MEDIA ALLIANCE WITH AN ADVOCACY PILLAR, DEDICATED TO INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM ON CROSS-BORDER CRIME TRENDS, ILLICIT ECONOMIES, AND THEIR IMPACTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND AMAZON COMMUNITIES.

The journalism of our project is founded on the strong belief that regional phenomena can only be understood through cooperation across country borders, just as organized crime operates. To grasp security trends, we work with local partners across Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela to foster regional cooperation between investigative journalists and researchers.

To visualize the presence of organized crime and illicit economies, we build maps and databases, quantifying their impacts. But to capture the nuance and tell the human stories behind the numbers, we continuously travel to the field—our mandate remains to tell stories in their most complete and attractive form, which is why we also pursue building audiovisual elements into our narratives.

Journalistic content targeting audiences in and outside of the Amazon is only one part of our work. We also target policymakers with investigative reports and advocacy campaigns, generating and distributing knowledge and tangible solutions about Amazon security—always departing from the wellbeing of local communities and the natural environment.

Amazon Underworld in the news

“What the Amazon Underworld team found is chilling. Criminal organizations control the lives of entire populations, ignoring local authority or acting in collision with it.” – BRAM EBUS, AMAZON UNDERWORLD FOUNDER AND CO-DIRECTOR

“Amazon Underworld is a web of interconnected investigations that has, at its core, the most rigorous, comprehensive, and user-friendly mapping of armed groups throughout the Amazon” – PAMELA HUERTA, AL MARGEN FOUNDER

“The question is: if they don’t do this, what could they do? It is a complex analysis that defines a complex reality but which shows that organized crime takes advantage of these scenarios in which the State does not want to act or does not want to be present.”
